The Atlanta Wind Symphony will preview the program the group will perform in Chicago at the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic, America’s largest instrumental music conference. The December 11 concert opens with Ron Nelson’s fast and festive Rocky Point Holiday. The program features clarinet virtuoso Andy Hudson performing Scott McAllister’s Black Dog, a piece inspired by the Led Zeppelin song. Another concert highlight is the world premiere of Infiniti, a work commissioned by the Atlanta Wind Symphony and composed by Georgia native Katahj Copley. The concert also includes Aaron Perrine’s And Sings the Tune Without the Words, an instrumental setting of a poem by Emily Dickinson; Tielman Susato’s Selections from “The Danserye,” a suite of Renaissance dances; and John Philip Sousa’s George Washington Bicentennial.

The 2021-2022 season marks the Atlanta Wind Symphony’s 42nd anniversary as an all-volunteer community wind ensemble dedicated to delivering inspiring performances of quality wind band literature. Comprised of more than 75 adult musicians, the group has performed at Carnegie Hall and has received the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Silver Scroll, North America’s most prestigious award for community concert bands. Atlanta Wind Symphony Music Director and Conductor Dr. David Kehler serves as Director of Bands and Professor of Music at Kennesaw State University where he oversees all aspects of the University’s expanding band program and teaches courses in instrumental conducting, symphonic repertoire, and 20th century music. AWS Associate Conductor Tyler Ehrlich is Director of Bands at Decatur High School and conductor of the Emory University Wind Ensemble. AWS Associate Conductor Chris Shumick is in his 10th year as the Director of Bands at Milton High School, where his bands consistently win top honors at festivals and contests.

The December 11 concert is free; tax-deductible donations are accepted at the concert, via mail, or online. Funding for this program is provided by the Fulton County Board of Commissioners. To help spread the joy of the season, the band will be collecting new, unwrapped toys for the Toys for Tots program. For more information visit www.AtlantaWindSymphony.org.
